ABYSSINIANS
Artist Info: Vocal trio. The Abyssinians are: Bernard Collins, Donald Manning and Linford Manning. Linford Manning also sang for Carlton And The Shoes. From the start they released their music on their own Clinch label.
Donald Manning wrote “Satta Massa Gana”, recorded at Coxsone´s studio and released in 1969 as “Far Far Away” on their Clinch label, then retitled in 1971 as “Satta Massa Gana”. It was their first release. Donald Manning says, Joe Gibbs recorded the riddim for Satta again to release Peter Tosh´s “Here Come The Judge” with “Ah So” by “The Destroyers” as the flipside. The Abyssinians in reaction recorded the riddim again as “Ah No So”, also released as “Mabrak”. “Satta Massa Gana” means “Thanks to God”. But in amharic this expression is in fact used only when speaking to an equal. So the right expression “Yim Mas Gan” to say “Thanks to God” was used for the second recording.
Then they released “Yim Mas Gan” and then “Declaration Of Rights”.
Donald Manning tells that he learned in Mortimer Planno´s house a song called “The Good Lord Sent Me From Zion”. This song was released by The Abyssinians as “Forward To Zion”. On a traded CDR appears a track by Bob Marley called “Good Lord Sent Me From Zion” what is the same song, obviously learned by Bob Marley too at Mortimer Planno´s house. “Good Lord” by The Abyssinians uses the same phrases.
Linford Manning left the reggae scene and rasta and became a reborn christian.Bernard Collins is still working as a musician in Jamaica, while the Manning brothers are working and living in USA. Donald Manning is still performing under the name “Abyssinians”. Bernard Collins in line with two other singers also performs as a second group called “Abyssinians”.

“Let My Days Be Long” sounds so similar to “Jason White” that it could easily be taken for a re-voicing of the same master tape. However, differences subtle yet clear indicate that it is an almost identical retake of the rhythm.
“Crashie Sweeps” is a revoicing of “Jerusalem”.
“Satta-Me-No-Born-Ya” is a revoicing of “Satta Massagana”.
