CHAPTER 1:
WAILERS PRODUCTIONS

In 1966 The Wailers recorded two final songs at Coxsone´s Studio One. They released „Bend Down Low“ and „Freedom Time“ on their first single on the new founded label „Wail´N Soul´M“. Bunny tells, they sold around 40.000 copies of their first record.

The label „Wail ´N´ Soul“ was founded and owned by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Rita Marley. Rita Marley was part of the group. She even paid for some 7-inches as the Matrix RM indicates. Previously Rita Marley was member of the Studio One´s Soulettes who had finished in 1966. Later Rita Marley was member of the Tuff Gong´s Soulettes but in 1967 these were not founded.
In 1967 they recorded and released a dozen new songs, the earlier ones with a supporting horns section. Most of them are now called classics.
During Bunny´s fourteen months imprisonment during 1968 and 1969 only a few songs were released, those were not that successful and the label became more and more inactive.
In 1969 Bunny reinstalled the Wail´N Sou´M records shop, and started to sell old stock copies to have some money to release some new tracks like „Feel Alright“ and „Tread Along“.
To get some money for their own productions The Wailers sold some ten songs to Leslie Kong (released on the album „The Best Of The Wailers“) and four to Ted Pouder (released on 7-inches).
They went to Lee Perry who was busy feeding the UK market with his Upsetter productions. This led to the release of „My Cup“ on a blank labeled 7-inch, followed by „Duppy Conqueror“, a number one hit in Jamaica with over 50.000 sold copies, so tells Bunny. The album „Soul Rebel“ was the first artists album released in Jamaica and UK at the same time. It was followed by the album „Soul Revolution“ on Upsetter.
This helped to release a lot of new 7-inches and some represses of old songs during 1970 and 1971 in Jamaica on the label now re-named „Tuff Gong“. It also helped to start to feed the US market with some exported Tuff Gong 7-inches. During this time jamaican soccer star Alan „Skill“ Cole became the first manager of The Wailers.
Meanwhile the controversely treated JAD team met The Wailers through a contact made by Mortimer Planno. The Wailers made a private recording for Planno and some demo recordings for JAD meant to convince foreign labels to sign a contract with The Wailers. The two singles released by JAD („Bend Down Low“ / „Mellow Mood“ and „Reggae On Broadway“ / Oh Lord, I Got To Get There“ are not credited to The Wailers but to Bob Marley and Bob Marley Plus Two. Bunny Wailer treats these as no Wailers tracks and all releases of further demos as illegitime.

Oppressor Man

Written by Peter Tosh.

Recorded at Randy´s. RS writes, it would be recorded in summer 1970 and it would be the second recording. Compared with the Lee Perry recording of January 1971 in sound specially in the use of the rhythm guitar it seems more likely that „Opressor Man“ would be recorded later in 1971 to be the third recording of the track in fact.

Lead vocals by Bob Marley.
Harmonies by Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Rita Marley.
Hugh Malcolm on drums, Jackie Jackson on bass, Alva Lewis and Ranford Williams on guitars, Gladstone Anderson on keyboards.
Recorded in March 1971 writes RS obviously citing Bunny Wailer. I think with reason Raul raises doubts in this recording date, telling the rhythm guitar of „Pour Down The Sunshine“ sounds close to the rhythm guitar of tracks like „Give Me A Ticket“, „Give Her Love“, „Sugar Sugar“ and like the Leslie Kong tracks of early 1970 sounding like „Chuck. Chuck“ while tracks of 1971 have a rhythm guitar sounding more like „Chuck. Chuck-A-Chuck.“

Lead vocals by Bob Marley.
Harmonies by Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.
Aston Barrett on drums, Bunny Wailer on bass, Alva Lewis and Ranford Williams on guitars, Glen Adams and Winston Wright on keyboards, Uziah Sticky Thompson on percussion.
This take starts with Bob singing: „You said you love me. I said I love you. Why won´t you stop your crying, dry your weeping eyes.“ Only this take at the end has vocals like: „love you from the bottom of my heart“ and „I can´t explain. Though the fox still remain, I need your love so much.“
Recorded June 1971.
Recorded at Dynamic or Randy´s.
Produced by A. Cole.

Jelly, Guava Jelly (Version), Guava

Semi-instrumental, including some vocals „why won´t you stop your crying“ „Dadadamsel, … belly, … guava jelly“, „baby i won´t gonna love“
Jamaican 7-inch release: Tuff Gong, 1971, a-side: Guava Jelly / b-side: Jelly (Matrix: FBM-7732-B) I think the single gives only „ersion“ as the title of the b-side. Recently the official title is given as „Jelly“. Previously also „Guava“ was used on releases and at auctions.
French LP release: The Complete Wailers 1967 – 1972 – Part III – Jungle Dub, JAD AB 07591, 1998 (2,14) titled „Guava“
USA CD release: The Complete Wailers 1967 – 1972 – Part 8 – Satisfy My Soul Jah Jah, JAD CD 1005, 1999 (2,14) titled „Jelly“
USA CD release: Grooving Kingston 12, CD-Box, Universal, 2004 (2,14)

Guava Jelly (Alternate)

This take starts with Bob singing: „You said you love me. I said I love you. Why won´t you stop your crying CHILD, dry your weeping eyes.“ (the word „child“ is here added.)
At the end we DON´T have lines like „love you from the bottom of my heart“ and „I can´t explain. Though the fox still remain, I need your love so much.“
USA 7-inch release: Tuff Gong TG 5005, 1972, a-side: Lively Up Yourself / b-side: Guava Jelly
French LP release: The Complete Wailers 1967 – 1972 – Part III – Satisfy My Soul Jah Jah, JAD AB 07521, 1998 (2,10)

French CD release: Rebel (3-CD-Box), EMI / Fifty Five 541 393-2, 2002 (2,08)

Guava Jelly (Alternate 2)

This take has some bongos at the start. This take starts with Bob singing: „You said you love me. I said I love you. Why won´t you stop your crying, dry your weeping eyes.“ (the word „child“ don´t apear here.) In the following some expressions („I really really really love you“ or „dam dam dam damsel“ or I love love love you“) are like the originals and some are like alt take 1.
The track runs 2,28 and in so far is longer as the original and longer as the alternate 1. I have it on Rarities from AC CDR. Sounds like coming from a tape not from a 7-inch.

Red (Dub Plate Mix), Redder Than Red (Dub Plate Mix)

The track features only a few words by Bob Marley: „Red red red“, „I powered on the“, „I´ll be“, „Now tell you“ and „Red red red“. All these phrases do end in a echo. I would prefer to call this one „Red (Dub Plate Mix)“.

Written by Bob Marley.
Lead vocals by Rita Marley.

Probably Hugh Malcolm on drums, Jackie Jackson on bass, Alva Reggie Lewis on guitar, Glen Adams on piano.

Concrete Jungle Dub (2006 Remix)

Melodica cut using the instrumental version of „Concrete Jungle“ (1971).
Recorded at Randy´s Studio 17. Produced by Lee Perry.
Previously unreleased.
UK CD release: Augustus Pablo Meets Lee Perry & Wailers Band – Rare Dubs 1970 – 1971, Jamaican Recordings JRCD 023, 2006 (3,04)
Note: This CD release comes with a wrong artist credit featuring Augustus Pablo who is not playing at this track. In so far the musician credit given at the sleeve is another mistake. A long time collector told me he is able to identify the used versions as the versions mastered for the recent Universal release of Wailers music. Augustus Pablo died 1999 and in so far can´t play over the tracks mastered just recently.
Then the album credit features a mistake as it says „1970 – 1971“. „Rainbow Country“ is recorded in 1975.
This remix is produced by Bunny Lee in 2006.
