Part 2 – 1967-1972
Tuff Gong 127 King Street Label
The label Tuff Gong located on 127, King Street was founded 1970. The name „Tuff Gong“ has its origin in a nickname of Bob Marley, according to Lee Perry, or is a mix of ideas by Guy Coombs, the label designer, and Bob Marley, about the tuff time to come and the african instrument, the gong, used for communication.
The first two singles appear with a label with „TUFF“ written above and „GonG“ written vertically on the right and a graphic showing a gong.
All other singles appear with the classic label with „TUFF GONG“ written above in form of an eye.
In total circa 42 different singles were released on Tuff Gong from 1970 to 1971 with reportedly no new new release in 1972.
„Black Progress“ (released on a blank single understood as connected to Wail´N Soul´M label) and „Hold On To Your Feelings“ were the first two recordings with Carlton Barrett on drums and Aston Barrett on bass who both became members of the Wailers since then.

Hold On To That Feeling (Credit: Bob & Rita, Lester Sterling´s All Stars) (Matrix: DYNA WRLS 2148-1) /
Version (Matrix: DYNA WRLS 2117-1)
Recorded in summer 1970 and released somewhen later. I think the single was released during autumn of 1970, but it is also possible that it lasted until early 1971 until this one was pressed and released.
This 7-inch appears with the early Tuff Gong label with „TUFF“ written above and „GonG“ written vertically on the right side and a graphic showing a gong
with black writing on red background and
with green and black writing on yellow background. It is not known if both are originals or one is an original and the other a repressing. This single is understood as the first Tuff Gong single.

I saw one of those on the classic label with black writing on green background mislabeled „Sun Is Shining“ on the a-side.

Run For Cover (Matrix: DYNA Bob Morley 2208-1) /
Sun Is Shining (Matrix: DYNA Bob Marley 2209-1)
The a-side is recorded in November 1970. The b-side is recorded in March 1971. The single is released somewhen between March and June 1971.
This 7-inch appears with the early Tuff Gong label with „TUFF“ written above and „GonG“ written vertically on the right side and a graphic showing a gong
with red and green writing on white background, (Seemingly the first pressing) and
with green writing on white background and
with brown writing on white background.
Tuff Gong, Repressing, 1971
Run For Cover (Matrix: DYNA Bob Marley 3174) /
Sun Is Shining (Matrix: DYNA Bob Marley 3175)
This release with new matrixes appears with the classic label
with blue and orange writing on white background,
and also on orange vinyl and
with brown writing on white background and
with red writing on white background.
This appearance of this single with new matrixes shows that the original stampers of the second Tuff Gong single were destroyed soon after use. What a bad and expensive accident soon after the start of the new label!
Blank, Repressing, circa 1971
(Sun Is Shining) (no credit) (Matrix: DYNA Bob Marley 3175) /

Tuff Gong, Original, 1971
Send Me That Love (Matrix: DYNA Bob Marley 3176-1) /
Love Light (Matrix: DYNA Bob Marley 3177-1)
Both tracks were recorded in March 1971. The single is released somewhen between March and June 1971. The matrix with „Bob Marley“ shows that he was responsible for the production of the stampers. This is common for the Tuff Gong singles of the time but not for the Upsetter singles. So I like to follow that here the first pressing is on Tuff Gong and a repressing is on Upsetters. RS has the tracks as Wailers / Lee Perry productions. But Perry said it is not his sound and he do not remember this session.
This 7-inch appears with brown writing on white background and with yellow writing on white background without printed title and credits on b-side (so far say RS).
JC mentions both sides without titles and credits.
I saw another single appearing with brown and black writing on white background on both sides and both sides titled. I am not sure if all these belong to the first pressing or the one with both sides titled may belong to a second pressing.

This single appears with red writing on white background and without printed title and credits on the a-side. It seems this one and the next are both original first pressings.

Bring It Up (Credit: The Soulettes) (Matrix: DYNA B Marley 3515-1)
Both tracks were recorded in summer 1970. But the classic label used for this single appeared not earlier as 1971, so this single is from 1971. The single is probably released somewhen between March and June 1971 as the stampers for this single are made at the same time as those used for the previously listed singles.
This is not a Wailers single. But this single have a writer credit for both songs to Bob Marley and a producer credit to Bo Marley and Lee Perry.

Kaya (Matrix: GPW+7) /
Kaya Version (Matrix: GPW+8)
The tracks were recorded in January 1971. The single is released a little later first on Upsetter and probably later during 1971 on Tuff Gong. I think it is sure that the release on Tuff Gong is made after the Upsetter pressing, so it is a repressing. If not, it would be the second Tuff Gong single and would have the early label, but in fact it has the classic label. It seems Lee Perry gave the stampers to the Wailers after use for his pressing.
This 7-inch appears with green and red writing on white background without titles and credits on label and with green and black writing on white background without titles but with credits on label.
RS and JC don´t mention this single. I saw it at ebay. Lee Perry productions on Tuff Gong. The b-side is not the instrumental version but the so called „Kaya Version 2 (Scat Mix)“.
