Andy C: Collection of alternate mixes from JA / UK singles and three alternates from the 1982 grey sleeved box set issue of Natty Dread (Lively Up Yourself), No Woman No Cry, Bend Down Low), collected by Andy Clayton
Amael C: Not c ollected by Andy, but found by Gael Doyen. There are three alternate remixes from 1982, now released at Legend Deluxe, but they are not the ones from this CD
I like to believe that all songs from this CD are released. I could identify some. I think, 01, 02 and 07 are the ones from the 9-LP-Box. To be confirmed. 03, 05, 06, 09 are similar to the 7-inch releases I have, but the running times are different, so I only guess what are the sources. 18 sounds so different that another 7-inch would be a surprise source, but I have no better idea. Maybe that one is in fact a demo.

And a third source has
23. Jamming with spoken intro (3,13)
The spoken intro is recorded at a different time and place and mixed into this song posthumous. But the “Jamming” is also longer here as on the previously available sources.
24. So Much Trouble Rehearsal 1979 (3,22)
This track starts at the same moment as the edit kazo made. But it is a minute longer before the guy starts to talk. Sadly the sound quality is not that well.
I have these two tracks on my collection “Wailers 2004 – 2006?.

1979, SURVIVAL DEMOS / ALTERNATES, 3-CD (Source 1)
CD 1:
01. So Much Trouble In The World (Demo 1) (3,51) Most of all the synthezizer is missing here. Vocals same as the album track. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 13 seconds shorter.
02. Zimbabwe (Demo 1) (3,51) Some extra guitars and extra percussion is missing here. Vocals same as the album track. From Survival Demos 1-cd.
03. Top Rankin´ (Demo 1) (3,14) Different mix with clearer sound.
04. Babylon System (Demo) (4,43) Including false start running (0,13) Song is running (4,30). Some extra guitars and background sound effects are missing here. Also the tracks runs slower and nyahbinghi drums are added. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 9 seconds shorter. (Once a sound problem occurr). (Complete track with perfect sound on Confrontation Demos as Extra Track 13.)
05. Survival (Demo) (3,34) Faster tempo. The released track is this recording but it is slower. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 6 seconds shorter.
06. Africa Unite (Demo) (3,04) Alternate lead vocals exactly like written on the inner sleeve of the Survival Album. The album track has a different last verse. Different harmonies echoing the lead vocal. Background sound effects are missing here. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 11 seconds shorter. Once a sound problem occurr as if the recording was interrupted.
07. One Drop (Demo 1) (4,05) Alternate lead vocal as Bob Marley is singing also the last three lines of the text printed at the inner sleeve of the Survival Album release. The album track don´t have these lines. Same backing, but different mix of the harmonies and no background percussion. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 13 seconds shorter.
08. Ride Natty Ride (Demo 1) (3,45) Alternate vocal recording with an extra shout at the beginning, the vocals sung a bit more relaxed, sometimes a bit scatting („Fire, the fire…“ „ this this this fire…“ „Go Deh Dready…“ and the final vocals also included clearer sound. Some background sounds missing. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 13 seconds shorter.
09. Wake Up And Live (Demo) (7,33) Same vocals and solos, but longer as the album track and longer as the additional Wake Up And Live Part 2, some 30 seconds more of this session and the sound is rougher without the last mixing work done. Probably the source for the 12-inch mix. From Survival Demos 1-cd, but 20 seconds shorter.
10. Mix Up Mix Up (1983 Remix) (5,04) from CD: Confrontation
11. Blackman Redemption (1983 Remix) from CD: Confrontation (3,32)
12. Rastaman Live Up (1983 Remix) from CD: Confrontation (5,20)
13. Shake Up, Soul Shake Up Party (Demo) (4,18) Seven seconds, the false start, longer. But better sound on Dada Demos.
14. She Used To Call Me Dada (Demo) (3,52) Six seconds longer as on Dada Demos. But better sound on Dada Demos.
15. Jungle Fever (Demo) (2,00) VG. Twelve seconds longer as on Dada Demos. But better sound on Dada Demos. Following one opinion this song is recorded early in April 1980 before leaving to Zimbabwe´s Independence Celebrations held 17th to 18th April 1980 during the Uprising sessions at Tuff Gong Studio, Kingston. Following Stephen Davis this song is recorded in 1978 as a demo for Lee Perry.
16. One Drop (Demo 2) (Scat Version) (4,56) Same as the One Drop (Alternate) (Demo) but there are additional 38 seconds of Bob Marley scatting at the end of the song after singing the last line. Bad sound quality as there is a disturbing sound like the disc is skipping. Better sound on Dennis Thompson Mix.
17. Ride Natty Ride (12-inch) from CD: Songs of Freedom 4-CD Box Island, 1992 (6,22) and from 12-inch maxi-single: UK Island 1979, a-side: Wake Up And Live / b-side (?), (?)
18. Mix Up Mix Up (1983 remix, 7-inch Edit) (3,33) Survival Out-Take. From 12-inch maxi-single: UK Island DMD (Promo) 1983, a-side: Mix Up Mix Up (album track) / b-side: Mix Up Mix Up (7-inch Edit) and from UK 7-inch release: Island Mix Up a-side: Mix Up (edit) / b-side: (?)
CD 2:
01. Rastaman Live Up (Demo) (7,29) demo with false start, lenghty passages with harmonies only and some more vocal lines with Bob Marley scatting and the band jamming, sounding like an earlier demo with Bob Marley teaching harmonies
02. Blackman Redemption (Demo) (4,21) alternate mix with reverbs and echo
03. Zimbabwe (Demo 2) (3,55) Alternate vocal take. A few different lead vocals seem to be the only difference.
04. Soul Shake Up Party (Demo), Shake Up (Demo) (4,18) unreleased demo which exists with a false start and count-in
05. Top Rankin´ (Demo 2) (3,16) Alternate take with different vocals, different dubby lead guitar chords, without horns and harmonies.
06. One Drop (Demo 3) (4,24) Alternate vocals with some lines missing, no harmonies, no percussion. Earlier take. Among the available this would be the first.
07. Ride Natty Ride (Demo 2) (3,31) lead vocal differs only in two words, no harmonies, no horns.
08. Wake Up And Live (Part 2) (2,26) from USA 7-inch release: USA Island 1979, a-side: Wake Up And Live Part 1 / b-side: Wake Up And Live Part 2
09. Blackman Redemption (7-inch) (4,06) from Jamaican 7-inch: Tuff Gong, 1978, a-side: Blackman Redemption/ b-side: Blackman Redemption Version
10. Top Rankin´ (Demo 3) (Scat Version) (3,19) Alternate take with different lead vocals including scatting. Including harmonies and horns. As Bob seems to work on the final arrangement as it is found on the album Survival, it seems likely that this is a third alternate vocal, recorded after the recording of the album take.
11. Rastaman Live Up (Demo 2) (7,07) Including false start, lead vocals by Bob Marley and harmonies by I-Threes and some more vocal lines with Bob Marley scatting and the band jamming
12. So Much Trouble (?) (1,20) maybe from rehearsal
13. Rebel Music (Live) Bob shouts Selassie I live at the start, maybe recorded in Jamaica (?) (5,22)
14. Get Up Stand Up (Live at Horse Riding Stadium, München, Germany, 01st June 1980) (7,18)
CD 3:
01. Blackman Redemption (Version) (7-inch) (4,06) from Jamaican 7-inch: Tuff Gong, 1978, a-side: Blackman Redemption / b-side: Blackman Redemption Version
02. Zimbabwe Dub (Demo) (3,36) VG. Instrumental, additional lead guitar licks and some bongos at the end of the song.
03. One Dub, One Drop (Version) (7-inch) (3,54) from CD: Songs of Freedom 4-CD Box Island, 1992 and from Jamaican 7-inch: Tuff Gong, 1979, a-side: One Drop / b-side: One Dub
04. Ambush In Dub, Ambush In The Night (Version) (7-inch) (3,16) from Jamaican 7-inch: Tuff Gong, 1979, a-side: Ambush In The Night / b-side: Ambush In Dub (Ambush In The Night Version)
05. So Much Trouble In The World (Instrumental) (7-inch) (3,50) from UK 7-inch: Island WIP 6501, 1979, a-side: So Much trouble / b-side: So Much Trouble Instrumental
06. Don´t Give Up, Rastaman Live Up (Version) (7-inch) (4,20) from Jamaican 7-inch: Tuff Gong, 1978, a-side: Rastaman Live Up / b-side: Don´t Give Up
07. Babylon System Dub (Demo 1) (4,04) Some parts vocal, some parts instrumental with the vocals dubbed away. And this one is a faster mix, otherwise the same as the demo and the album track.
08. Shake Up (Demo) (false start) (0,11)
09. Untitled Instrumental 1 (Demo) (3,24) Five seconds longer as on Dada Demos. Instrumental featuring bass, drums, bongos, organ, horns.
10. Untitled Instrumental 2 (Demo) (3,38) Untitled instrumental featuring bass, drums, percussion including bells and syn-drums and calimba, piano, organ, rhythm guitar, horns.
11. Untitled Instrumental 3 (Demo) (3,51) A different untitled instrumental featuring bass, drums, percussion, organ, horns, mellow lead guitar.
This 3-CD has seventeen demos, ten with excellent , six with good and one with bad sound quality.
Ten (One Drop appears twice) are from Survival Neville Garrick Source. Some sources say there is a Survival Demo 1-CD with some tracks running a little longer, but this is just because of different cuts, nothing exclusive to be found at that 1-cd. (The Demo of the tenth and last song from this album is at Ultra Rarities 6-CD)
The six add four earlier takes and a Version and a Dub.
The last one is a Scat Version.
Six other demos, Rastaman Live Up (Demo 1), Rastaman Live Up (Demo 2), Blackman Redemption (Demo) and Untitled Instrumentals 1, 2 and 3 (Demo)
Three vocal demos have a better sound on Confrontation Demos
Two tracks live and one track rehearsal, all good sound quality.
Twelve released tracks. Excellent sound.

Kilimanjaro is a DJ at a famous sound system in Jamaica. This tape seems to be recorded “Live In Session” at a dance with Kilamanjaro playing many dub plate specials of The Wailers, Bob, Peter, Bunny, Ziggy, Andrew and some other artists. Lots of talking in between the songs, the dubplates are usually played only for a few riddims and then stopped and started again.
Songs 1 – 7 can well be recorded 1980 or 1981.
“Don Dada” was released in 1991. So I estimate songs 8 – 25 and the whole tape like this is made 1991. Maybe remember Bob Marley being in Zion since ten years.
Songs 26 – 37 seem to be taken from vinyl sources and added to the live-in-session part. They don´t include any Kilimanjaro talking.
The songs 02, 03, 16 and 29 seem to be “Bad Play (Bad Card)” the 1980 sound system special RS mentions.
Song 05 seem to be “Redemption Song” the 1980 sound system special RS mentions.
The songs 06 and 16 seem to be “No Sound Boy No Cry” the 1980 sound system special RS mentions.
These sound system specials were recorded 1980 with new vocals by Bob Marley using the common riddims.
I like to believe what RS describes as “Get Up Stand Up” sound system special is in fact song 04, what I think is not a Bob Marley but a Ziggy Marley track.
Some of the Bunny Wailer tracks appear on a Live Silver Hawk dancehall tape in the 1990s.

Ras Jonah is a Jamaican established in UK. He bought and used the original master tapes and added further instruments to create these mixes in the late 1970s or early 1980ies. He played the additional instruments, xylophon, melodica and bongos by his own and recorded this tape in his own studio. His voice appear at the Bushweed DJ piece on the African Herbsman track. Some mixes appeared on dubplates.

5. Is This Love (Instrumental) (4,11)
Single releases containing alternate and instrumental mixes of three of Bob Marley’s best known tunes: Lively Up Yourself (1974), No Woman No Cry (1974), Is This Love (1978).
The highlights in this material are the never heard before studio cuts to No Woman No Cry, with I-Threes’ background vocals and Carlton Barret on drums, totally different from the studio version of the song originally released in the Bob Marley & The Wailers’ album “Natty Dread” (1974).
These cuts available here for the first time ressemble more the live version issued as an A-side single in 1975, also included in the albums “Live!” (1975) and “Legend” (1984), although with a much cleaner sound, that only a studio recording could render.
The dubs and demo versions in all three singles are also being released for the first time ever.
Note: This set appeared in March 2009. Mixed by a fan using the multi track masters to receive a sound close to the UK Island original sound.
