1. Bob Marley Dub Plates

BOB MARLEY DUB-PLATES:
Dub-Plates are 7-inch or 10-inch vinyls made only in a limited number of a handful and given to DJs to play as exclusives at their sound-systems. Hardly any info about dub-plates is available in books. Whenever dub-plates appear at ebay auctions, usually no further info is available. Most of all it is usually not sure, if a dub-plate was made during Bob Marley´s life-time or post-humous. For sure it is not that difficult nowadays to use traded cds with demos and modern technology to create vinyls with demos tracks. But it seems that some collectors put some dub-plates or parts of dub-plates to cd on some traded demo collections. The few infos listed here are taken from auctions or given by collectors. If you know more, let me know, please.

EARLY 1970S DUB-PLATES:

In the early 1970s masters were two tracks with one track having the vocals and the other track having the instrumental part. Many “Versions” were made just using the instrumental track (like Hypocrites, Mellow Mood, Thank You Lord). Dub Plates were mixed from a two track master tape from which dubs are cut – sold by the producer or a band member to guys from sound systems. Later in the mid 1970s finished dub mixes were given to be pressed on dubplates.
Love Light, Love Light Shining (Dub-Plate)
While the original 7-inch take has Bob Marley singing these lines: “Just keep your love lights burning (3x), Let it burn (4x), Just keep them joy bells ringing (3x), let them ring (4x), just you take one step closer (3x), Come on in (4x)” to finish with a jam, this alternate take has the harmonies singing these vocals and Bob Marley jams a second voice over the lines with completely different vocals like: “I just wanna keep my love lights burning, yeah. I´ll do it anytime you want me to. And you know who I´m talking to. Spread it good over yeah woman. Wow now. Yeah yeah. I keep my love lights sticking out light like a torch now. I´ll stick it with storch now. I slay the wicked with fire now. Wow now. Hear what I sing. Let it ring, let it ring. Oh now – as close as I am to September, I still don´t miss November. Come on woman hold me tighter. I can show you tomorrow will be brighter. Cause you no sorrow never hurts you. Not even bad minded people could stop this one. As it was in the beginning it shall be right here right here right here. Let me know what I have to say. I wanna see you live with love. I wanna see you live with love. Hot pants on. I dig my sister with a maxi and I care for the one with the high pants too. Never hurt that woman. She is a good little sister.”

POSTHUMOUS DUB-PLATES:

I have this track on “Rarities from UK Nr. 7 CDR” (5,38).
No Woman No Cry (Mono)
So Jah Seh (Mono)
Talking Blues (Mono)
We Belly Full (Mono)
These four tracks appeared in 1974 on one-sided 7-inches on UFO label. These were no official releases but DJ promos made for use by only a few sound systems prior to the album release. The set of four 7-inches were sold together for 1.888,88 US Dollar at ebay. The seller told me, that he wasn´t able to find a remarkable difference to the album tracks. Maybe there is a small difference as the label say, all tracks are released in mono. Although these 7-inches don´t have dub mixes, I list these here as this kind of appearance on 7-inch is as rare as dub plates. Probably only a handful were made.
NEW: Allen found that So Jah Seh (Mono) played at 1974 U Roy Tape that appeared 1994 includes this song with Bob Marley on lead vocals and no harmony vocals. This might well have its reason by the MONO standard of the UFO plates. It makes us a different mix.
NEW: An Natty Dread album acetate is mono, but the song So Jah Seh includes backing harmonies.
Lively Up Yourself
Bend Down Low
No Woman No Cry
This three track 10-inch dubplate appeared at ebay with a description that these songs would maybe include some echo. The matrix would include “Allied” and “New York USA”.
I don´t have these.
