INTERVIEWS

By Neville Willoughby in Bull Bay, Jamaica December 1973

Jamaican Longplay release: Interviews…, Tuff Gong RM 007, 1982

Jamaican Tape release: Interviews…, Tuff Gong

The interview is mixed in Natural Mystic, Trenchtown Rock, Redemption Song, Babylon System, Time Will Tell, Natural Mystic, Revolution, Survival, One Drop, Roots Rock Reggae, Guava Jelly, Rat Race.

Deleted Promo Longplay: Interviews, Jamaica, Tuff Gong, 1978. One info goes like this: Only three copies were made. Another info goes, that a few more were made for promotional purposes.

France Maxi-CD release: JAD SPCD 220-2, 1997: Kaya, Kaya Version 2, War – Selassie Is The Chapel, Rock To The Rock (A Capella), Interview 1973 (24,05)

THE BOX SET

Nine-Longplay-Box: Island BMSP 100, 1982 (Limited pressing of 10.000, so far I know some were released in UK, some in USA, some in JA and some in Australia. )

Reissue of: “Catch A Fire”, “Burning”, “Natty Dread”, “Live!”, “Rastaman Vibration”, “Exodus”, “Kaya”, “Survival” and “Uprising” with different sleeves including all lyrics.

It is mentioned in Distant Drums Issue 12 that this box might include some alternates of Natty Dread, but finally this is not confirmed by RS or JC and contradictionary to the concept of this Box release.

Note: A collector told me that the same mastering of “Natty Dread” appeared on LP around 1989 and also on cassette 56 281 GT, maybe made in Germany. He tells, “Lively Up Yourself” has some echo at the “whoooi” intro and has no female but male backing vocals similar to the take on “Caribbean Nights”, “No Woman No Cry” has a different intro and some other organ parts, “Bend Down Low” has a flute. He also tells, the album “Exodus” would be different, “Jamming” has some piano part and the I-Thress singing at the end, “Waiting In Vain” has some noise of somebody in the background at the counting at the start.

UK Maxi-CD release: Tuff Gong / Island CDTGX21DJ, 2006  (8,16)

UK 12-inch Maxi release: Tuff Gong 12TGX21DJ, 2006 (8,16).

The sleeve-art and the label art is idenitical to the 2005 releases related to the album “Africa Unite” so that I think even this release of remixes is loosely related to the “Africa Unite” album of which the Deluxe Edition on 2-CD include the original mix of “Exodus”.

As an old-fashioned collector of vinyls who to some extend have learned to enjoy listening CDs too the new way to share music in form of mp3s via pay-download at sites like www.amazon.com is of small interest for me.

If I see it right, this started in 2006.

So far I see we can say in general all Bob Marley & The Wailers´s music that we can find on a CD is also now to get as a pay-download for around 0.99 USD each song. Only a handful of very long live tracks is “album only”. Seemingly some bonus tracks are available as downloads only for a short time. Since 2007 a few remixes appear only as downloads and are not released on CD anymore.

1994 The Ambient Dub Mixes 1

This album is similar to the 1997 Dream Ambient Mixes, but seemingly not officially released.

Bought in Germany, this may well be made in Germany or in our neighbourhood, maybe a dutch coffee shop. This album is made for chill out partys. Ambient dub mixes of Bob Marley´s hits with Bob Marley´s original vocals woven in an athmospheric slowly grooving background.

This CD looks like a private pressing as also indicated by the title “Hometown Mix”. But it is a cd pressed in a factory, not a cdr.

FOOTNOTE 6:

Since the mid 1990s until the mid 2000s a couple of Japanese CDs appeared. Most of the CDs include previously unreleased live shows. I hear there is a deal between Rita Marley and the Japanese companies so that these CDs are kind of “official” releases. They are also to get now as downloads at amazon.com.

So far I know these CDs are made from the previously traded shows listed in the “unreleased” section of this site in all details. Sometimes the released CDs only have parts of longer traded sources. To my best knowledge no Japanese CD includes something that is not to find at a traded CD. So far I know the Japanese CDs not even include a sound upgrade. And finally – so far I see – many of the Japanese CDs have a wrong title.

What I found are these CDs:

Capitol Rehearsal 1973

1975 Philadelphia

1975 Boston

1975 Agora Hall

1975 Quiet Knight Club, Chicago

1976 Apollo

FOOTNOTE 7:

Starting in 2005 but especially since 2008 home-made amateur creations of various kinds appear at www.youtube.com and similar websites. In 2009 someone collected 57 unreleased audio tracks of such videos. A lot of this is cut. Some in in fact released. Usually some heavy techno or drum and bass or house riddims are combined with Bob Marley vocals. Some are hip hop mash ups. My impression is that the musical or artistic standard is decreasing unto nothing. If a mix not even find it´s way to an unofficial blank label 12inch vinyl release usually the mixes don´t match to professional mixes. Some of them are funny and if they are only meant for fun, so far they do work sometimes better sometimes lesser.
