Part 1 – 1962-1966

1964

Long time it was believed the first Wailers session took place in 1963, but now it seems confirmed fact that the first recording session took place in July 6th 1964 and led at first to the release of two singles, maybe released simultaneuosly as blank singles before their official release. The second single is public released in November.

Simmer Down (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: C-Dodd-II-13) /
I Don´t Need Your Love (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: C-Dodd-II-12)
Both sides recorded circa July 6th 1964. The single was a hit in Jamaica in August 1964.
Appears originally with silver writing on black background, and
labeled and blank – on blue vinyl,
labeled and blank on yellow vinyl,
labeled and blank – on green vinyl,
labeled and blank – on yellow vinyl
blank only – on red vinyl.
Note: The second pressing maybe released simultaneously has C110 / C111 on the labels and credits to „Bob Marley & The Wailers“ and appears also with silver writing on black background.
Note: Also reissued with silver writing on red background and again with black writing on yellow background.
Note: This first Wailers single was sold 80.000 times in Jamaica.
Note: „Simmer Down“ was reissued in the seventies on Coxsone, black writing on white background, with b-side „Sunday Morning“.
Note: Also released on UK Ska Beat JB 186, 1965.

Coxsone C 112 / C 113
Mr Talkative (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: CN 3) /
It Hurts To Be Alone (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: CN 4)
A-side is recorded ca. July 6th 1964, b-side is recorded ca. August 28th 1964. Both sides were mastered circa September 23rd 1964. The single was publically released in November 1964.
Appears originally with silver writing on red background and
labeled on yellow vinyl and
labeled on blue vinyl and
labeled on green vinyl and
labeled on red wax and
with silver writing on black background.
Note: RS describes the label as „maroon and silver“ and gives „C112“ as on the label, but there is in fact a label with silver writing on red or maroon background without this number on the label, and there is another label with silver writing on black background with this number „C 112“. So I think both similar styled labels belong to original first pressings of which it is not known what was the first and what the second.
Note: And there is also a label with black writing on yellow background without the number „C 112“ that looks like a third different original pressing on Coxsone label with the horizontal line and the complete adress at the bottom.
Note: It can be estimated that the big success of „Simmer Down“ also led to big sales in the range of 50.000 of this next single release.
Note: „It Hurts To Be Alone“ was reissued as b-side of „I´m Going Home“ on Coxsone in the seventies with silver writing on red background, in 1973 with red writing on white background, with black writing on yellow background and with black writing on white background. Reissued also „Coxson“ label with green and black writing on white background.
Note: Also released on UK Island WI 188, 1965 and „Mr Talkative“ again as b-side of UK Island WI 211, 1965 (the first UK Wailers single).

During July and September 1964 the Wailers recorded harmonies for three songs of other artists released by Clement Dodd probably in 1964. All these four singles do not mention the Wailers on the label.

Josephine (Credit: Lord Bryner) (Matrix: C-Dodd II-8 or C DODD 118 (JC)
Label has silver writing on red background.
Appears also on red wax and blank labels.
Note: RS and JC do read the matrix differently. II-7 and 117 printed in the vinyl indeed look similar. The title on the label is „Where Sammy´s Gone“, not „Where´s Sammy Gone“ like on the Heartbeat CD.
Note: No UK release of this single is known.
Note: Both sides have a matrix that seems earlier as the matrix of „Simmer Down“ (Matrix: C-Dodd-II-13). In conclusion the mastering of these single was finished before the mastering for the single with „Simmer Down“. In conclusion the question appears, if this one or the „Simmer Down“ 7-inch is the first appearance of the Wailers on a 7-inch. Funny that this topic is mentioned no-where.

C&N

Don´t Let Me Die (Credit: Jackie Opel) (Matrix: CSD 45)
Label has black writing on white background.

At September 23rd two further Wailers singles were mastered and released soon, first as blank labeled singles, then around November / December 1964 labeled.

I Am Going Home (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: CN-1) /
Destiny (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: CN-2)
Appears originally with silver writing on black background and
on labeled on red vinyl,
on labeled on yellow vinyl
and labeled on blue vinyl.
Note: RS describes the single as given and also reversed as „Destiny / I Am Going Home“. JC gives it only reversed. The label leaves it open what is the a-side and what is the b-side.
Note: This single nor these songs were not released in UK.
Note: „I Am Going Home“ was reissued wit this title and again retitled as „I´m Going Home“ both on Coxsone with black writing on yellow background and on „Coxson“ label with green and black writing on white background.
Note: „I Am Going Home“ was reissued in the early 70ies with silver writing on red background with „It Hurts To be Alone“ as b-side and again on Coxsone label with red logo and writing on white background in 1973.
Note: „Destiny“ was reissued in 1999 as the b-side of „Do You Feel The Same Way“ on Studio One with black writing on white label and again on a promo for Heartbeat´s „Wailers & Friends“ album in 1999 as b-side of „Rude Boy“ with white label and writing on blue background.
Note: An unconfirmed US Studio One single „Destiny / Version“ is said to have a 2001 remix and a 2001 version.

Coxsone
Climb Up The Ladder (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: Federal FC 6159-1) /
Straight And Narrow Way (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: Federal FC 6157-1) /
Appears originally with silver writing (Not black writing as told by RS Side 3) on red background.
Note: The single gives the title as „Climb Up The Ladder“ while RS and the CD releases give „Climb The Ladder“.
Note: JC describes the single like listed. RS don´t tell what is the a-side and what the b-side. The matrixes don´t help in so far. The label leaves it open what is the a-side and what is the b-side.
Note: This single nor these songs were not released in UK.
Note: „Climb Up The Ladder“ was reissued in the seventies on Coxsone with black writing on white background titled „Climb The Ladder“ as b-side of „I´ve Got To Go Back Home“ (Bob Andy) and again like this in 2000.

The tracks of the following single were recorded in August 1964. The date of the mastering and release is unknown. Maybe also released late in 1964 or in 1965.

Coxsone
Dana (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: C DOD-17) /
Don´t Ever Leave Me (Credit: The Wailers) (Matrix: C DOD-16)
Appears with black writing on yellow background.
„Dana“ is an incorrect title, „Donna“ is the correct title, as on UK single. „Don´t Ever Leave Me“ was reissued on Studio One ST 714 with black writing on white background as b-side of „Pussy Galore“.

At November 26th and December 4th another pair of two Wailers singles were mastered and released soon. While the first three Coxsone singles are released under the name „The Wailers“ the second single here is the first one that is released with the lead singer mentioned, „Bob Marley & The Wailers“ and „Peter Touch & The Wailers“. The spelling „Peter Touch“ was used for quiet a while before changed to the better known „Peter Tosh“. His birth name in fact is „Winston Hubert MacIntosh“, saying both spellings are artist names.

Appears originally with red and black writing on white background and
with also originally with blue and black writing on white background (Info by RS).
Note: This single was released on UK Island WI 211, 1965.
Note: „Hoot Nanny Hoot“ is only here and at UK Island WI 211 the track without overdubs, different to CD and album releases.
Note: „Do You Remember“ was reissued as „How Many Times“ in 2004 on Studio One with black writing on white background , b-side is „Go Jimmy Go“.

And another single appeared in December 1964 or earlier.

There She Goes (Credit: The Wailers & The Mighty Vikings) (Matrix: WC5) /

Appears with green writing on white background,
sometimes without the credit to „The Mighty Vikings“ and
with green writing on yellow background.
