Part 2 – 1967-1972

Jamaican Singles

Wailers Productions

Wail´N Soul´M Label

The label „Wail´N´Soul´M“ was founded in late 1966 by Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. Bob Marley invested the money he had earned while working in a factory in USA. The name has its origin in „WAILers“ aNd „SOULettes Music“.

The very first single appears with a label art with four stars. This label was used only for this single and its repressing in 1966 and 1967.

The label with green, gold & black background is the most expensive in production and is understood as the classic label. It was used for singles in 1967 and early in 1968.

During 1968 when Bunny Wailer was in jail the income of the label decreased and so a couple of singles were released without an expensive printed label art but as blank singles, some of them stamped with different kinds of stamps used.

The label with vertical writing on coloured background is used for early repressings of circa three singles. Bunny Wailer tells on „Wailers Legacy“ that it was him who took care to restore the label and to release some repressings and some new singles after his release from jail in September 1968. It may have took a while until early in 1969 to have some records ready to sell. That is why I think the repressings with the vertical writing are from 1969.

Circa 45 Wailers singles were released from 1966 to 1969 on the Wail´N Soul´M label. Besides these a single „Gee Whiz“ by Esete was released on Wail N Soul. And another single was „Medley / Version“ by I Thess Marcia, Judy & Rita.

Freedom Time (Credit: Bob Marley And The Wailers With The Soul Brothers) (Matrix: CS Dodd-128-RM02)
Both tracks were recorded in November 1966. Then the tracks were mastered and the 7-inches were pressed. I would estimate they tried to have the single out in December 1966. Released then or a bit later early in 1967.
The matrix indicates that Clement Dodd was responsible for the production of the stamper. Nevertheless the tracks are the first Wailers self-productions.
This first single on the Wail´N Soul´M label and the only one that appears on a label with four stars.
The original appears with silver stars on red background.
